As the Pink Rose Dinner donations come in over the years, so too do some wonderful letters, many paying tribute to the work of the Cambridge Breast Unit. A main theme from our correspondents and donors is how much fun is had while raising money for this very popular cause.

From letters received in 2007:

'It was a wonderful evening'

'We greatly enjoyed entertaining our clients and raising money for such a wonderful cause'

From letters received in 2006:

We had a lovely evening on Saturday and everybody enjoyed the event. The food had a pink theme and many of my guests work pink but it was the men that really went to town, wearing pink shirts and pink ties! Many thanks for all your help
Mrs Sandra Digney

We really enjoyed ourselves, a wonderful excuse for me to go completely pink with good reason, even down to the food. We hope the Pink Rose Dinner was a huge success and you raised lots of money.
Mrs Nicola Brown

Ten of us enjoyed a pink 2 course meal, with pink champagne on arrival! Included in the donation from friends who were not even at the supper but who wanted to support this very worthwhile cause.
Janet Willmott

We had a wonderful girls-only evening. Everyone was wearing pink, we had pink tableware with pink roses, pink candles and pink baubles. I tried to make all of the food pink too (sangria with salmon canapés, pinkish pumpkin soup, chicken with pink grapefruit and pink potatoes, pink summer pudding with strawberry ice cream and even some cheese with pink bits in!!) I arranged for everyone to bring a wrapped raffle prise. In a pink balloons that I hung around the room was a piece of paper with a number so everyone burst a balloon to win a raffle prize. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and and it was a very poignant because a friend of ours who was to be at the dinner couldn’t attend because she has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

From letters received in 2005:

'As usual the evening was a great success, it is a good excuse for 12 'girls' to get together …'

'I hope the campaign is a huge success again this year'

'I hope the Pink Rose Dinner made a lot of money for this incredibly worthy cause'

' .. at about 7.45pm out went all the lights and we and the rest of the village were in total darkness… my son parked his car on the lawn to shine his car lights into the front windows .. soon we had enough candles to see our way around. We managed to light the food table sufficiently so that people could at least see what they were putting on their plates. We read the raffle ticket numbers with a torch… they didn't get us connected again until 12.30 am. Everyone had such a good time despite no lights, or maybe because we had no lights and we had to laugh … we had to agree that candlelight was more flattering to most of us! Of course my nickname is now Hyacinth Bucket because her candle-lit suppers couldn't possibly be better than mine. We raised over £510 into the bargain … I'm already being asked if I will be doing the same next year'

'Our dinner came at a time when we could acknowledge the very recent advances made towards the future avoidance and cure of many cases of breast cancer'

'We held a 'Pot Luck Supper' again this year which was very well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all'

'We did a quiz night and the proceeds were pledged towards breast cancer research. I had breast cancer four years ago, so I think I get a sympathy vote! I hope you had a wonderful response, and keep up the good work'

'Eight of us (dressed in pink and in our pink elaborately decorated conservatory!) spent a wonderful evening wining and dining and having a truly super time. We hope that you have raised lots of funds through this initiative'

'We hope that you have been successful in raising your target of £50,000, and have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in our own small way'

'I hope this will help in a small way towards the development of the research centre at Addenbrooke's. My guests enjoyed a fun evening … with all best wishes for reaching the target needed for the centre'

'Great fun had by all. Great pleasure to help'
